Subject: Sad news: Jacqui Webster

I am sorry to have to inform the list that Jacqui Webster has passed away after a long battle with cancer.  Jacqui was well known to the agility community in Southern California, first with her dogs Bonnie and Clyde, then later with her apricot miniature poodle Pretty Boy Floyd.

Since she had no relatives here, there will be no funeral services, but I will arrange a memorial service in the near future.  Please let me know of anyone who would like to attend.

I am taking care of Floyd, who has fully recovered from his recent back surgery.  Floyd has known me since Jacqui first adopted him and he gets along well with my shelties.

Jacqui was (is) a very special soul.

An icon of So. Cal agility trials, she loved to sit ringside,  visit and
watch her friends run their dogs, and in her final years, watch  her friends run
HER dog, Floyd. She always had an encouraging word, or swift  kick in the
pants, as needed.

Earlier this year, Jacqui and Floyd were both feeling well enough to run
together. They weren't very fast, Jacqui's cue's were off, they had some run-bys
and wrong courses and they were way over time. They didn't care, they were
playing together and having the time of their lives. I'm not sure whose grin
was  bigger, Jacqui's or Floyd's. To hear the whoopin and hollering when they
crossed  the finish line, you would have thought it was a MACH.

Jacqui always found the good in every run. She never got mad at the dog, or
blamed the dog. If Floyd wanted to design his own course, that was fine. If
Clyde wanted to go visit the jump setter, that was fine, too.

Jacqui knew what was important:
The DOG.
Spending the day in the park hanging out with your friends.
Playing the game of agility WITH your dog.
Friends.

I will really miss Jacqui, So. Cal agility just won't be the same without
her.

Subject: Old Lady from Santa Ana in Soccer Shoes
(Long)

OK, you had to be there! A 68 year old female, slightly overweight, dressed in business clothes (me) goes into Sportsmart to purchase soccer shoes. First impression was to call the Feds and report the place for violating child labor laws. Gave them the benefit of a doubt and let that go. Next I captured this young hispanic (I think) and asked him to direct me to the womens soccer shoes. Without too much conversation he walked me to them and immediately started to leave. "Do you have any socks to try shoes on?", I asked politely. He muttered something about getting me some. I picked out a couple of pair that were in my price range and waited for the socks. Ten minutes later I go looking for him in my bare feet. I find him chatting with a friend. "Hey, where are my socks? I don't have all night!!", I say not so politely. He brings my socks - one mans size and one childs size. I struggle with my socks and try lacing up the shoes, when a nice you lady see me and asks if she could help. "Thank you, nice lady", I answer with syrup in my voice. She got me a matched pair of socks my size and helped me lace the shoes. "Do you play soccer?", she asks with a doubtful look on her face. "No", I tell her and go on to explain that I was going to use them for dog agility and what it was all about. She made and few kind and polite remarks and then she disappeared. Next came a tall blond boy of about 16. I'm thinking by now that the whole store would parade by to view the old lady in soccer shoes. I was wrong. This young man was very helpful and knowledgable. He asked the right questions. Was I going to be on grass? Could it be wet at times? Would I ever be running on dirt or mud? And then explained how they should fit, what kind of sock were best, the best cleat pattern, etc. "Thank you, Nice Tall Blond Young Man." I am now the proud owner of a pair of Adidas soccer shoes.
