Sadly, on July 3, 2001 Samson was diagnosed with nasal cancer. This bold little dog underwent a series of tests over several months before the cause of his symptoms was known. He was one Gamble leg away from completing the GM title thus completing his ADCH. Currently Samson is nick named "Jimmy Dean" by family members. His agility weight no longer important, he's allowed to have anything he wants. He just can't imagine why it took so long for us to let him eat the way he always knew he should.

My fondest memory is of an agility moment. One where a wee little dog out-thought (is that a word?) me. I'll try to make the explanation portion brief. This is the Dog Agility Masters Tournament (very big occasion) and Samson (my Chi) is teamed up with 2 Border Collies. Oh my, what an honor, we CAN'T mess up!

Going into the final class of the weekend (3 days, several runs a day) Samson and I are clear (no faults), we've done very well so far. One of the BC's on our team has gone off course - speed kills. Whew, at least it wasn't us! We're going into Team Relay, the final run. It's Samson's turn and during his run he pops out of the last weave pole (incorrect behavior) Oh No! I bring him around to repeat the obstacle. Each obstacle must be completed or the team is eliminated.

Peter Lewis (a pioneer of agility) from England is judging. The pressure is really on!!! I can no longer recall how many times I tried to put my way over-excited Chihuahua back through the weave poles to complete them successfully. He kept popping out at the last pole. Finally, Samson had had enough of me. Just what the heck did I want by making him repeat those things over and over again? He's a Masters dog, what was I thinking? He did them enough already he's thinking.

As I bring him around to once again enter the weave poles he stops dead in his tracks and looks up at me. You can see the little wheels turning. He scans the area around him...stopping to gaze at a jump 15' or 20' away. Obviously I haven't been happy with something so darn it, he's gonna fix it. He takes off - runs over and does the jump and then runs gleefully back to me.... ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?

Peter is laughing, and the everyone exploded, me included. No matter what that little snot did, he always made me laugh.
