Socialization

Socialization There are many places that you can take your dog for socialization. Pet stores, parks, garden stores, and building supply stores are a few. If your dog reacts poorly to strangers have them offer your dog treats. In a short time the dog will come to view these strangers as wonderful opportunities in life. The same procedure can be used to socialize the dog around other dogs. Start with dogs known to be trustworthy. Reward for polite behavior in the presence of the other dog. Gradually work up to rewarding the dog for being close to the other dog, getting closer and closer, until the dog is taking it's reward next to the other dog. A small dog that makes a noisy or aggressive display at other dogs is inviting danger. This is not cute, and can be an ingredient for disaster. Some dogs may not ignore this invitation to spar and take the mini dog up on the offer. The results of this are not likely to be good for the small dog. Teach the dog to quietly observe or ignore other dogs, minding its manners. © 1999 - 2004 Katie Greer. No portion of this may be copied in any manner without expressed written permission. |
